Hi all,

We’ve got a busy week ahead as we wrap up the planting season, with our final community planting for 2025 happening this Saturday! 🌳

To keep things interesting, each event this week has a different time 😁

Tuesday 9th September – Whakaipō Bay with Heidi from 10am

Tomorrow we’ll be out at Whakaipō Bay to support Heidi, who is planting with a Kindergarten. We’ll:

  • Prepare the site and dig the holes (shouldn’t be too many)

  • Help the children with their planting

  • Walk through the entire site, checking over all the plants

  • Remove weeds and release any plants getting smothered

  • fertiliser last year’s planting

  • enjoy morning tea 🍰

Peter Marshall has done chemical control over the past few years, so it shouldn’t be too bad out there.

I’ll bring spades, grubbers, hand tools, fertiliser, and of course, morning tea.

We’ll be right at the bottom of Whakaipō Bay, where we have been planting for the last few years. With the kids, we will be by the old fallen tree, behind the bike shelter (from the 2022/23 planting). We’ll also check all plants from 2022–2024 through this area.

Thursday 11th September – Plant delivery #1

I’m hoping to get the first truckload of plants delivered to Whakaipō Bay on Thursday, need to confirm the timing. I’ll unload them on the other side of the fence, ready for placement on Friday.

Friday 12th September – Setup day from 9 am

This is our big prep day for Saturday’s planting. We have support from DOC on the day!

  • Mynoke have generously donated vermicast, and DOC are helping transport it – brilliant 💚

  • Hopefully second delivery of plants at 9am, or it will be the first, with the second later in the day.

  • The new site has poor soil, so we’ll be filling holes with vermicast first before laying out the plants in each hole.

  • Bring gloves and sturdy footwear. The ground is uneven, and there’s a chance of showers, so bring a jacket.

Whakaipo Bay off Mapara Road. The planting site is halfway down the access road on the left. We’ll park near the Girl Guides at the bottom and walk back up. There is some parking near the planting area, but it’s been ripped up, so not ideal if it’s wet.

Saturday 13th September – Community Planting Day 10am

Our last community planting day of the season at Whakaipō Bay – everyone welcome!

Tuesday 16th September – Follow-up check from 12pm

We’ll head back to the Whakaipō Bay planting to check that all plants have been planted and mulched well.
