Wicked Weeders 27th May

Hi all,

Hope you all had a great weekend!

I thought we might get rained off tomorrow, but the forecast keeps changing — we could be in for a dry afternoon yet. So let’s make a plan and head to last year’s big Greening Taupō Day planting site along Tauhara Road, beside the golf course. With our 2025 GT Day event happening nearby next week, we want this site looking great.

Aaron from Landclear has been through and taken out the scrub weed that was creeping back into the cleared area, and we’ll check on how the plants are doing. We’ll collect any bamboo that’s no longer needed, straighten any leaning stakes, and tie up any plants that need extra support. I will bring along a few extra tools to deal with anything that needs to be dealt with — and of course, afternoon tea!

Don’t forget your gloves and come prepared for all weather ☀️🌧️

🕧 12:30–2:45 PM

We’ll also have a special guest joining us — Claire Concannon from RNZ, who hosts Our Changing World. Claire is spending time with the Project Tongariro crew and is keen to see the Wicked Weeders in action. Don’t be shy — please don’t stay away! I promise we won’t make you do anything you don’t want to do — we just need a keen bunch to help wickedly weed the afternoon away, and I will bring freshly baked muffins to bribe you all 😊

See you there!

Coming up

Next week is a short one — but it’s going to be full-on and exciting with our Greening Taupō Day celebrations on Thursday 5th June. If the weather doesn’t play ball, Friday 6th June will be our backup date. We’re expecting another fantastic turnout, with lots of great activities planned, including our big Arbor Day planting 🌱🌱🌱

We have 3,000 plants arriving from Corrections and 3,000 bamboo stakes coming

Here’s the plan:

Tuesday 3 June

  • Vermicast will be on-site.

  • Hole digging will be underway.

  • Wicked Weeders will begin refilling holes with vermicast.

  • We may receive up to two deliveries of plants today, so we’ll also begin laying out plants on top of the refilled holes.

Wednesday 4 June

  • Final hole digging will be completed.

  • Plant delivery is expected (timing TBC and whether it’s one or two loads — I’ll confirm on Tuesday).

  • We’ll continue filling holes in with vermicast and laying out plants.

Thursday 6 June – Greening Taupō Day!

From 10am come along and check out the action! There’ll be awesome activities, a big community planting, hot soup, and venison sausages 😁

Tuesday 10 June

From 1230pm we’ll return to the Tauhara Road planting site to check that all plants have been well planted and are looking good 🌿
