Taupō Golf Club Project Birdlife Planting 2023

The first community planting of the season was a great success, with a huge turnout of over 150 people coming out to the golf club to plant over 2000 native plants.

This was the third Greening Taupō community planting at the Taupō Golf Club since 2021. Greening Taupō in collaboration with the Taupō Golf Club launched ‘Project Birdlife’ in 2021, a Taupō Golf Club initiative to improve the area surrounding the greens for native wildlife. Approximately 12 hectares have been identified to be revegetated with native plants.

Over the past 3 years, we have received over 3000 native trees from Trees that Count, and this has been matched by Contact Energy. Additional planting will be done throughout the grounds by the club, and ongoing annual community plantings are planned for all to participate in and benefit from.

In 2022 and 2023, we had a fantastic group of rangatahi from Pathways help us out. Each year. they unload the 2000 plants and place them throughout the planting site; they also get the opportunity to take the auger from John and make a few holes. The Wicked Weeders got stuck into the 2022 site and released last year’s plants from the long grass, infilled a few gaps, and then got stuck into the bamboo stand to cut out a heap of free stakes for the plants. We then got spoilt with fresh scones and savouries for morning tea from the golf club

For the continued success of ‘Project Birdlife, including the ongoing maintenance and preparation of planting sites and annual community plantings, Taupō Golf Club is sourcing future funds through a mix of grants, fundraising and encouraging support from the local golfing community, and the ongoing support of Greening Taupō.
