Matariki Planting 2022

Since 2020 Greening Taupō has been collaborating with Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board to restore the banks of the Waikato River. Each year 2,000-3,000 trees have been planted with funding from Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust, Trees That Count, Ministry of Primary Industries One Billion Trees and Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, along with support from Taupō District Council and advice from local experts.

This year over 500 people came to celebrate Matariki by connecting to the whenua and looking after te taiao at our annual event with 2,500 native trees being planted for future generations. We wrote our wishes and planted them with the trees, thinking of Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star associated with granting our wishes and realising our aspirations for the coming year. Then we all enjoyed some hot kai thanks to Miraka Limited. What a fantastic day! This annual planting event has become one of the main Matariki events for Taupō.
