Taupo has many gullies that are steep sided with narrow and flat bottoms. Work undertaken several years ago by TDC has created corridors that have a dual recreation/storm‐water purpose. The base work is done, and in most cases the gully floor functions well, but the gully edges and walls are still dominated by pest plants, though some planting has occurred. Where weeds dominate they will progressively be replaced with suitable low forest and scrub species to establish bush corridors between the lake and Mt. Tauhara and other bird habitat areas. These gullies are ideal local community projects because a large number of residents sections back on to these areas and many residents use them where walkways exist. Some gullies already have low native forest trees and enhancement will be relatively simple while others will involve considerable clearance of blackberry and completely replanting.
