News from Greening Taupo November 2013

Welcome to another edition of the Greening Taupō Newsletter. Over the last couple of months we’ve been busy connecting people in the community and bringing them together to achieve our common goal - to ‘green’ Taupō. Since launching in July this year, we’ve planted over 25,000 plants in the Taupō district - well on our way to our goal of 250,000 in five years.

Although the summer season is now upon us and we aren’t specifically planting on a large scale; Greening Taupō is still busy out in the community building relationships and profile fundraising. Plus we are always encouraging individuals and families to 'green up' their own backyards!

Community planting days will resume in about April 2014 and we’ve got a few on the cards. Read on to find out what we’ve been up to.

King of the Ring Charity Boxing Event

Support Greening Taupō and get in behind the Trademe auctions and other fundraising opportunities brought to you by the 100% Lake Taupō Charitable Trust.  Greening Taupō has been selected as one of the 16 recipient charities for this year's King of the Ring boxing event and plus there are 3 different ways you can contribute to help us try and raise money.  The charity that earns the most money gets given an extra $10,000 on top of their proceeds so we've got a big incentive to raise the most cash!

There are 3 ways to donate and support:

1. Trademe auctions.  These would make fantastic Christmas presents! Look out for Greening Taupō's unique experience trips and prizes.  They are:

Greening Taupō Partnerships

We are delighted to welcome Penny and her team from Chris Jolly Outdoors and Cathy and her team from Quality Print who are the newest Greening Taupō partners.  Our partnership programme enables local business to partner with us and align their brand with ours.  This is not only an opportunity to do something to improve our Taupō environment but partners also get a number of plants that their team can plant and put their stamp on somewhere in our community.  We showcase our partners on our website and work with each of them on other opportunities.  Contact Nina to find out more

Patuiwi Reserve Trust Land Otumuheke Thermal Stream Community Planting Day

It rained and it poured but what a turn out!  1200 trees were put in the ground in only a couple of hours!  The heavy rain must have spurred the crew on to plant faster! A huge thank you to everyone that turned up to help make a difference to this very special and unique place. This planting yet again showcases agencies working along side the local community, iwi and Greening Taupō.  Thank you to Waikato Regional Council, Patuiwi Reserve Trust, The Radio Network and The Spa Hotel.

Community Partners Working Together

Here is a neat example of how Greening Taupō brings together different local agencies and community groups.

Landcorp contacted Greening Taupō indicating they had 1500 manuka trees that could be replanted.  As Bike Taupō had been planting on the Rotary Ride (Spa Park - Huka Falls mountain bike track) we thought they could do with these plants to fill in a few more gaps especially at the beginning of the track which is on Taupō District Land Concil.  Bike Taupō, TDC, Landcorp and Greening Taupō had the trees dug up and replanted at their new home on the Rotary ride within a couple of hours.  TDC also came to the party and kindly donated a further 300 trees to be planted amongst  the manuka.  Easy, no red tape, and a prime example of how we can work together to get things done quickly and easily.  Thank you to Bruce and his team from Bike Taupō, Alison from TDC and Gordon from Landcorp.

NZ falcon find sanctuary in Taupō

This story is exactly what why we are doing what we are doing!! It is awesome to see this pair of rare NZ falcons raising their young right here in Taupō at Craters Mountain Bike Park just outside the predator proof fence at Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary. Also a fantastic example of what can happen when organisations like DOC, Bike Taupō, Project Tongariro and Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary come together in a community towards a common goal.

Greening Taupō and Local Schools
Greening Taupō has been connecting with local schools. Taupō Primary and Tauhara College were recently awarded with plants as they had the most students turn up to muck in at our community planting days. If you are at school or have kids at school in Taupō, come along to our planting days and bring your mates so your school can get some free natives to plant too!

If you have any questions or would like more information please feel free to contact our project coordinator Nina Manning on 027 628 8008 or
